AGRICULTURE

Zoe is an advocate for all aspects of both agriculture and agribusiness. Growing up, she was a member of both 4-H and FFA. She has raised cattle, poultry, goats, hogs, sheep, and horses for years. She lives on her family ranch in Lincoln County, and for over 15 years has managed a very successful feed store in Oklahoma City.

As an Oklahoman in agribusiness, Zoe has watched her opponent sit complacent for the last three and a half years while the American farmer’s way of life has eroded under the Trump administration. Their ways of life are being destroyed as they are forced to file for bankruptcy.

In an interview in March 2018, Frank Lucas said that Trump had “put his thumb on a very important issue” though referring to it as "a shotgun approach". What he was referring to was the imminent threat of Trump's trade war with China. In the same interview, Lucas said, “I represent . . . agriculture, the energy industry, and of course, the folks on Main Street. I cannot personally be involved in something that would create an all-out trade war."

Despite the platitudes, Frank Lucas took no action for almost two years while the Trump administration did just that: engage in a trade war that would decimate our farmers’ incomes. As expected, the American farmer suffered. After a failed bailout, Phase One of the China deal was reached in January. My opponent hoisted nothing but praise on the president for doing right by the American farmers, though he neither mentioned the damage already done nor acted to prevent it to begin with.

Additionally, the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic placed additional stress on the agricultural industry as farmers became classified as essential, yet safety standards seem to be less-than-important to our leaders.  Restaurants have closed. Schools have closed. The entire country has shut down just as the farmer was ready to unload this year’s crops. The food supply chain was broken, and farmers were euthanizing livestock while grain growers sat on grains that there was no demand for. Farmers have already spent money on next year’s crops. It takes a lot of generations to build a family farm. The COVID pandemic is threatening to wipe out the American farmer for good.

We are in an era in which farmers can’t retire as planned due to these heavy burdens, resulting in not just lost crops, but lost generations of farmers. “As an Oklahoma farmer, I am running for US Congress to represent the American farmer again,” said Zoe. “I will not sit complacent any longer, and neither should you, while our leaders continually misrepresent us.”  Zoe will not hesitate to write, support, or vote for any legislation that will ultimately help farmers and agricultural communities across the United States.
